About

Will uses oral storytelling, ritual and facilitated experiences to apply a mythic lens to life, culture and place — exploring wisdom and strengthening our capacity for Wise Action.

Wise Action is the combination of how we respond to the world and how we participate in our lives through our actions.

Will is a professional storyteller and mythologist. He holds a Masters in Poetics of Imagination from Dartington Arts School and Schumacher College, and studied for several years with Dr Martin Shaw at the Westcountry School of Myth.

Based in Fremantle, Western Australia, he is available locally and internationally for storytelling, facilitation and cultural study through mythology.

Storytelling

The Encounter.

Will creates an atmosphere of beauty and humour, where you can expect to laugh, think and cry. Storytelling is more than entertainment — it is the mode of transferring wisdom. Wisdom is not knowledge, not the acquisition of facts; it is action, how we respond and how we attune ourselves with the world.

The Inquiry.

Studying our encounters with storytelling builds the capacity to apply a mythological lens to life. Mythology requires our attention — to look at, to examine, and to draw connections between things. That attention is the cultivation of wisdom.

The Integration.

Wise Action is the integration of encounter and inquiry. It is the movement of insight into lived experience — how we respond, act and orient ourselves in the world. It is where the wisdom of the old stories becomes embodied as a way of living.

“A storyteller is a piece of the wild — carrying the voice of the ancestors, the memory of the land, and the pulse of life itself.”

— Dr Martin Shaw

Storytelling

Storytelling is an ancient technology for passing on the wisdom of self, place and culture. Stories transmit that wisdom through the poetic image — which precedes thought and language.

In a world where our imaginations are storied by images not of our own volition, what could be more important than turning towards the images of the old stories.

Will works with traditional stories, myths, folk and fairytales. His tellings balance the silly and sincere, and together with masterful questioning and facilitated experiences, create spaces for personal and cultural change — the ground of Wise Action: bringing the wisdom of story into how we respond to the world and actively participate in our lives through our actions.

“To follow Will into a story is to cross an important threshold — leaving the day-to-day behind and entering a territory of imagination that is at once unfamiliar and deeply recognisable. It is an experience that leaves a lasting mark.”

— Jeff Atkinson, Great Southern Men

“Will's storytelling is so vivid and rich that you can't help but hang on every word, and be transported across time and space. He has a precious gift for weaving narratives that will stay with you, in you, long after they are told.”
